Black Hole Picture

April 10, 2019 is an important day in the world of astronomy. After years of preparation by an international team of researchers, including computer scientist Katie Bouman, the first photo of a black hole was published.

Eight radio telescopes on four different continents were needed to take a picture of the black hole in the Messier 87 galaxy. The data collected by the giant Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) filled several hard disks. Therefore, the information that give a coherent image of the object 55 million light years away had to be filtered out. Thanks to Katie Bouman's algorithm, it was possible. But she is not the only one responsible for the publication of the photo - several hundred researchers and multiple algorithms worked together on this project.

By the way

The horoscope's name derives from the event horizon that winds around every black hole.
