A Star Certificate for Sophie Scholl

Sophie Scholl’s fight against dictatorship

In Nazi Germany there was not much light for the youth as they were imposed a way of thinking. Today, Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl and the White Rose movement are still synonyms of bravery and knowledge.

Why does Sophie Scholl deserve her own star?

Sophie’s courage is what is needed against oppression under a dictator like Adolf Hitler.

The question of how you behave during a dictatorship was being raised and the young could not resist to answer and share information. It was a first step to a change in the population, a first step of resistance.

Sophie’s work in The White Rose is recognized as an act of courage and nonviolent resistance, that’s what’s needed in times of oppression. Millions worldwide keep on with her fight against oppression and that’s why she deserves a star.

The life of Sophie Scholl

Sophie Scholl was born May 9, 1921. She was the daughter of Robert Scholl, a politician critic of the Nazi party, and his wife Magdalena Müller.

Her father was the mayor of Forchtenberg in the Free People State of Württemberg. When she was nine years old the family moved to Ludwigsburg and then to Ulm two years later.

She joined the girl’s wing of the Nazi Party, the League of German Girls. Nevertheless  Sophie was developing another kind of thinking thanks to her father, brothers, teachers and friends.

The encounter with the militarized state changed her political stance in an instance and she started practicing passive resistance. Later on, her brothers and friends were arrested for participating in the Wandervogel and the German Youth Movement.

The German Youth Movement was a group of youth associations that procured outdoor activities and sports. Sophie was bored of the Nazi system but she soon showed a talent for drawing and other arts.

In her time at war service, Sophie enrolled as a nursery teacher. She spent six months there in 1942.  Subsequently she started the Bachelor of biology and philosophy at the University of Munich.

Hans Scholl was already a student at the University of Munich. He and his friends were recognized by their political stands and they also shared a passion for theology, music, art, hiking, and other recreational activities.

The White Rose and Sophie Scholl's last years

The White Rose was a resistance group in Nazi Germany. They were merely intellectuals and led by Willi Graf, Alexander Schmorell, Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl, and other students from University of Munich.

They created leaflets with information against the Nazi party, about the mass murder of Jews and the oppression made by the dictatorship. Also, they called for a resistance.

In total they distributed around 15,000 leaflets in Munich and nearby towns and cities.

In their attempt to distribute the sixth leaflet at the University of Munich in 1943 they were caught handing out the copies by Jakob Schmid. Hans and Sophie Scholl were taken into custody by the Gestapo authorities.

Hans Scholl had a draft of the possible next leaflet at the moment of his arrest. The leaflet matched Probst’s writing and thus he was also taken into custody.

The siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl, as well as Christoph Probst were sentenced to death the 22 of February 1943 and were beheaded by guillotine.

Sophie’s last words:

“Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go... What does my death matter, if through us thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?”

The given courage of Sophie and the wider vision she held for her beloved country and compatriot was outstanding.

Her legacy lives on in Germany and also worldwide as a symbol of courage and light in the dark. Sophie’s courage keeps on existing in every person fighting dictatorship and fighting for liberty.

The graves of Christoph Probst, Hans Scholl and Sophie Scholl are located in Perlacher Friedhof, right next to the Munich prison, Stadelheim.
